A Glimpse Inside the Story

A journey through grief and love

Chapter One: The Beginning

It was the third of November 2016, and time seemed to slow to a painful crawl. The consultant’s gentle words confirmed what we had been dreading — Emily’s body could fight no longer. The ward sister had quietly cleared the corridor, creating a private pathway for our final journey together. They guided us to the family room, a space I had passed countless times but never entered, now understanding why other families emerged from it forever changed.

The room felt different from the clinical spaces we inhabited for many weeks. Someone had thought to soften the harsh overhead lights, creating pools of gentler illumination. A comfortable armchair waited, with soft blankets ready to wrap our precious girl. They had removed most of the medical equipment, leaving only what was necessary to keep Emily comfortable. The machines that had been such a constant presence in our lives grew quiet, their absence making space for the soft sound of our whispered words of love.

The nurse who had cared for Emily through so many nights stayed with us, her presence professional and yet deeply personal. We sat there, tears flooding our faces, as we whispered to our beautiful girl, holding her fragile body as it surrendered to the fight. The room was silent, save for the softest sound — her breathing, weakening with every exhale.

The nurse gently removed the stethoscope from Emily’s little chest and, barely audible, whispered, “I’m sorry”….Emily was gone.

About the Author

Patrick Cullen is a professional airline pilot, father, and writer who has faced one of life’s most devastating challenges — the loss of one of his twin daughters, Emily. Echoes of Emily is his deeply personal memoir, detailing the emotional journey through grief, love, and healing after that unimaginable loss.

In 2016, he believed he had reached the pinnacle of his life, but in a matter of weeks, everything changed. The heartache of losing his daughter was overwhelming, and the emotional toll was more than he could have ever prepared for. Through the pages of this memoir, he opens his heart and invites readers into his world of grief — and the incredible emotional resilience he discovered along the way.

The memoir chronicles how love, vulnerability, and resilience helped him become the father his surviving twin daughter needed — even in the darkest of moments.

With a career grounded in precision, patience, and high-pressure situations, Patrick brings those qualities to his storytelling, offering a raw and emotional reflection on what it means to heal and rebuild after tragedy.
